Training, qualifications & experience
In my past employment, I was a hairdresser where I used my active listening skills to make clients feel comfortable and at peace while maintaining confidentiality.
Volunteering in a youth group allowed me to observe how young people behaved and how it affected them. I became interested in working with young people who had trouble with daily interactions and behaviours.
Whilst the world started to become more computer-literate. I realised the need for me to be able to use one, so I took the decision to retrain. Whilst retraining I had to work with various members of the public, and once qualified and being encouraged to go for an interview I started to work in a secure environment teaching IT which meant working with people with disaffected backgrounds.
It became apparent to me that a lot of these people I was teaching had some neurodiverse conditions such as Dyslexia, Dyscalculia and ADHD. I took up the challenge to work towards being a Level 5 Specialist Teacher in Dyslexia to allow me to support people better.
I became aware of the hurdles the people had and the anxiety and stress it can cause and at times become really overwhelming.
I think this helped me to develop skills that I now use in my counselling work My non-judgmental approach helps my clients create a trusting relationship where they can discuss freely.
